“Stay back,” Race said, blocking a Marine who was about to go check on the fallen corporal.

“You think he’s infectious?” asked his captain.

“Maybe. Something’s still wrong.” The sense of danger was still coursing through most of Race’s body.

The ship’s admiral punched a command into his comm unit. “Chief Medical Officer Tenaway,” he ordered.

“Yes, sir,” the image of the ship’s head doctor said as it appeared upon the admiral’s unit.

“We have a situation. I need you up here with a quarantine team right away,” commanded the admiral. “Bring a body bag with you.”

“On my way, sir,” the medical officer replied before the admiral’s sensor unit went blank.

Some of the other soldiers were checking on the two that had taken the possessed corporal’s initial attack. The mighty blows had done a number on the two soldiers; one was suffering from several cracked ribs while the other was having difficulty breathing.

“I think his lung is collapsing,” Annette stated intently, causing some of the crew to rush in response. “Someone get me an emergency kit!”

One of the officers hit a panel in a wall to release a small case that he rushed over to Annette. She opened the container and started fishing around for supplies. She pulled out a couple of devices that she quickly pieced together and was about to slam it into the wounded man’s chest when the doors opened up. The medical staff and her team entered the room. One of the medics immediately caught sight of Annette with the device in her hand and rushed over to stop her.

“What’s the matter?” he asked, his voice slightly distorted by the quarantine suit he was wearing. “Collapsed lung?”

“Yup,” Annette said, lifting her hands high above her head in preparation, “and he’s fading fast.”

“Hold on,” the medic said, stopping Annette in her tracks while he reached into his medical kit. “I’ve got something a little better than that. Show me the medical readout from his sensor.”

Annette quickly dropped the device she was about to plunge into the soldier’s chest and picked up his arm so the medic could see the panel on the soldier’s arm. The medic took a quick look at it and punched in a couple of settings on the device he had pulled from his kit. He pinched a pair of clamps on the outer edge of the device and attached it to the soldier’s bare chest. Within seconds, the soldier was breathing normally.

“This does that,” the medic explained, pointing at the two devices, “but it also injects medicine and can help repair any damage to the lung. Nice diagnosis, though. Don’t meet too many grunts that can diagnose that.”

“We’ve had a lot of special training,” Annette answered modestly.

“Keep an eye on him; I’m going to go check on the others.” The medic moved on to the other injured soldier. “Come get me if his status changes.”

The rest of the medical team had started handing out containment suits to the individuals stuck in the room. The suits were a classic bright orange that was painful on the eyes.
